We are pleased to announce that Shake It Out, Inc is expanding our programming to reach even more Brooklyn based teen girls this August! Shake It Out, Inc will launch its second 5-day free summer program in 2018 by partnering with teens from local Brooklyn communities, and the SUNY New Paltz theater department in New Paltz, NY.
The program begins with a 1 day workshop where the teens will have a program orientation, and meet with a group of community members to discuss issues affecting their community. The girls will hear the community ideas and then begin thinking about some initial concepts related to expressing those ideas through theater.
The girls then head to New Paltz, NY for a 3-day program to create an original theater piece that reflects the needs of their Brooklyn community. The girls will be housed on the SUNY New Paltz campus and provided with 3 meals per day and snacks during their stay.
The program will culminate with a student-created performance, based on the work of Augusto Boal, for the community panel they met with on day 1, and the Brooklyn community at large (including family and friends) at a local community space in Brooklyn, NY.
During a Shake It Out, Inc. summer program, students will be exposed to the performance aspect of theatre, and analyze rich pieces of text that relate to the concepts introduced in the initial conversations with the panel of community members. This text will be the basis of the original theater piece performed for friends and community members in Brooklyn.
To participate in the Shake It Out, Inc. summer program, the girls have to be between the ages of 13-15 but do not have to audition or come with any previous theater/performance experience. Participants need only have an open mind, an interest in the arts and a commitment to the program and supporting the needs of their community. This summer program is led by the Founder/Program Director, an experienced Assistant Director and 1-2 teaching artists.

Our inaugural camp ran from July 26-28 2017 with six girls and two staff members at Unison Arts Center in New Paltz, NY! We created a unique theater piece while at Unison based on a poem by Eve Ensler. The girls came back to Brooklyn to perform their original piece for family, friends and the public.
