2018 Summer Program – Brooklyn to SUNY New Paltz!

In 2018 Shake It Out, Inc expanded our programming to reach even more Brooklyn based teen girls in August 2018. Shake It Out, Inc launced its second 5-day tuition free summer program working with teens from local Brooklyn communities, and the SUNY New Paltz theater department in New Paltz, NY.

The program began with a 1 day workshop where girls met and interviewed a group of female artists and community members to discuss what it is like to be a woman in today’s world. The girls then used those ideas to begin brainstorming ideas for their theatre piece.

The next day we headed to SUNY New Paltz, NY for a 3-day program to create an original theater piece reflecting the issues, challenges and joys of being a female identifying teen.  The girls were housed on the SUNY New Paltz campus and were provided with 3 meals per day and snacks during their stay.

The program will culminated with a student-created performance, which included movement, a poem by Eve Ensler, monologues and scenes written by them. The performance was held for friends, family and community members.

2017 – Inaugural Summer Program

Our inaugural camp ran from July 26-28 2017 with six girls and two staff members at  Unison Arts Center  in New Paltz, NY!  Check out their website to find out their offerings! We created a unique theater piece while at Unison based on a poem by Eve Ensler.  The girls came back to Brooklyn to perform their original piece for family, friends and the public.
